Rotherham United Miss Out on Signing Award-Winning Midfielder

Sheffield Wednesday’s Will Vaulks is expected to join Oxford United after his contract at Hillsborough expires this summer, as reported by The Star. Despite Sheffield Wednesday’s efforts to retain him, the terms remain unsettled, and it appears likely that Vaulks will move on to a new club for the next season. Vaulks, who became a crucial player in the second half of the season, was honored with the club’s Player of the Season award.

Sheffield Wednesday managed to secure their Championship status with a crucial 2-0 victory over Sunderland on the season’s final day, thanks in large part to Vaulks’ contributions. Losing such an instrumental player will be a significant blow for the team. With over 450 senior appearances, mostly in the Championship, Vaulks brings a wealth of experience. At 30, he still has plenty to offer, including his international experience with Wales, having earned seven caps.

Oxford United, recently promoted, is expected to sign Vaulks, marking an important acquisition for the team as they aim to establish themselves in the Championship. Although moving to Oxford might be seen as a gamble, Vaulks would likely become a key player at the Kassam Stadium and has likely received a compelling offer.

Earlier reports from the Rotherham Advertiser indicated that Rotherham United had shown interest in Vaulks earlier this year, but no move materialized. It’s uncertain if Rotherham still harbors any interest, especially as they prepare to play in the third tier next season. Persuading Vaulks to drop down a division would have been a challenge.

Oxford United acquiring Vaulks on a free transfer would be a significant achievement. Valued at around £770,000 by Transfermarkt, his signing represents an excellent piece of business for Oxford, enhancing their squad with proven Championship quality.

In summary, while Rotherham United will miss out on Will Vaulks, Oxford United is set to benefit greatly from his experience and skills. His signing could be a turning point for Oxford as they prepare for the challenges of the Championship, aiming to prove their critics wrong and firmly establish their position in the league.
