Reports from France indicate that Martin Terrier, the French winger for whom Newcastle United placed a €50 million bid two years ago, is likely to depart Rennes this summer. Now 27, Terrier’s future appears uncertain following a significant knee injury that has kept him off the pitch for an extended period.
Terrier’s ordeal began in January 2023 when he suffered an ACL injury, sidelining him for the remainder of that season and the first half of the next. Despite his efforts to regain form, his absence has had a notable impact on his valuation, with Rennes not expecting to command a fee anywhere near Newcastle’s previous offer.
During his rehabilitation, Terrier missed almost ten months of football, which affected his performance upon returning. Although he made 35 appearances last season and scored eight goals, his overall performance was inconsistent, with only a brief resurgence in January and February. His fluctuating form has left Rennes considering cashing in on the player this summer.
Newcastle United were not the only club interested in Terrier in 2022. West Ham and Leeds United also expressed interest, but Newcastle’s transfer priorities have since shifted. The Magpies have already secured their key target, Anthony Gordon, making a renewed bid for Terrier unlikely.
Ultimately, while Terrier’s future at Rennes remains uncertain, Newcastle’s focus has moved on, rendering past interest a footnote in the club’s recent transfer history. This story underscores the unpredictable nature of football careers, where injuries and market dynamics can dramatically alter a player’s trajectory.
