Sheryl Swoopes’ Take on Caitlin Clark’s Rookie Season Sparks Debate

WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes recently weighed in on Caitlin Clark’s rookie season during an episode of the “Gilbert’s Arena” podcast. While acknowledging Clark’s impressive achievements, including setting records for points by a rookie and single-season assists, Swoopes offered a nuanced assessment that has sparked considerable discussion.

Swoopes praised Clark’s statistical accomplishments, describing them as “hella good numbers,” but also suggested that Clark’s performance did not equate to “dominating” the league. Swoopes elaborated that while Clark and fellow rookie Angel Reese have shown significant talent, she did not expect either to dominate immediately upon entering the league.

“I still don’t think she’s dominating,” Swoopes said. “But she’s a different player than she was in the first half of the season.” She acknowledged that Clark has improved and adjusted well since the Olympic break but maintained that her overall impact did not meet the highest standard of dominance.

Despite Swoopes’ critical tone, she did recognize Clark’s growth and development over the season. “I’ve never questioned if Caitlin was a good player; I think she’s a hell of a player,” Swoopes noted. “My thing was…I thought it would take her some time to adjust to being a professional, and to me, I think that’s exactly what she’s done.”

Swoopes’ comments highlight the high expectations and standards associated with WNBA greatness and have sparked a broader debate about what constitutes dominance in the league.
