With the departure of Josh Umerah and Chris Wreh, Hartlepool United is in need of additional strikers to support and compete with their main forward, Mani Dieseruvwe. Given that new recruit Luke Charman is expected to play in a wide position, here are five strikers that the club could consider signing this summer.
Paul Blackett: Blackett had an impressive season, finishing as the top scorer in the National League North with 29 goals in 44 appearances. He has experience from stints in the academies of Newcastle and Sheffield United and was a key player for Gateshead when they were promoted to the National League in the 2021/22 season. Known for his goal-scoring prowess, Blackett could be an excellent addition to Hartlepool, though he will need to adapt to the higher competition level in the National League.
Danny Whitehall: Whitehall was the second-highest scorer in the National League North this season, netting 21 goals. The physically robust striker has a history of scoring for teams like Eastleigh, Maidenhead, and even the uniquely named American semi-pro side, Bugeaters FC. After missing out on promotion with Scunthorpe, Whitehall might be eager for a return to the National League, bringing with him the experience and strength Hartlepool needs.
Rob Harker: Harker, 24, has matured since his previous loan spell with Hartlepool in 2020, where he struggled to find the net in seven appearances. Despite being released by Halifax, he scored nine goals this season, demonstrating his capability to lead the line. With more than half of his league appearances coming off the bench, Harker could be a valuable backup to Dieseruvwe, ready to contribute when called upon.
Cedric Main: Main, a Dutch striker, ended the season strongly with Darlington, showing promise despite limited opportunities at York last summer. Known for his hard work and pressing from the front, Main’s tenacity could be an asset for Hartlepool. While his goal-scoring record is not as prolific, his ability to disrupt defenses and create chances could provide a different dimension to the team’s attacking options.
These players present a range of attributes and experiences that could bolster Hartlepool United’s attacking lineup. As the summer transfer window progresses, the club will need to carefully consider which of these strikers can best complement their existing squad and help them achieve their goals for the upcoming season.
