Following a crushing 45-point defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinals, Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic provided some perspective on the loss. Despite the significant margin, Jokic remained composed, suggesting the team could learn valuable lessons from the game.
The Nuggets initially took a 9-2 lead but were quickly overwhelmed by a 27-2 run from the Timberwolves, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Jokic, who had an impressive 40-point, 13-assist performance with zero turnovers in the previous game, was limited to 22 points, two assists, and three turnovers in this crucial matchup.
For the Nuggets, this loss was a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the playoffs. After dropping the first two games of the series at home, Denver had rallied with three consecutive wins, appearing to seize control of the series. However, the decisive Game 7 will determine which team advances to the Western Conference Finals.
Despite the lopsided loss, Jokic was philosophical. He emphasized the importance of reflecting on the defeat rather than dismissing it. “I think we shouldn’t [forget it]. I think we need to let it sink in,” Jokic stated, acknowledging the Timberwolves’ dominance. He pointed out that while the Nuggets had a promising start, the game quickly shifted in favor of their opponents.
Jokic’s demeanor in the postgame press conference was notably calm. He recognized that such significant defeats are rare and underscored the necessity of accepting and learning from the experience. “They beat us. They destroyed us, and you should learn from it,” Jokic said. He also humorously acknowledged the absurdity of the situation, emphasizing that the team needed to absorb the lessons from this loss to improve moving forward.
Looking ahead, the Nuggets face a critical Game 7 at home. This moment represents their first significant test as defending champions, and how they respond will be crucial. Jokic is confident that the team can bounce back. “We need to accept it. Take it. And just try to be better next time,” he concluded.
As Denver prepares for this pivotal game, the resilience and mindset of their star player will be essential. The outcome will not only decide their playoff fate but also test the character and fortitude of the reigning NBA champions.
