The Essendon Bombers are gearing up for the Mid-Season Rookie Draft, keeping their options flexible as they confirm plans to utilize their draft pick. With the draft fast approaching, the Bombers are actively scouting for potential talent to add to their roster.
Currently, 25 potential draft picks are open across the league due to season-ending injuries and retirements. However, it’s expected that about half of these picks will be utilized at the upcoming draft on May 29. Matt Rosa, Essendon’s new AFL Talent and Operations Manager, stated on AFL.com.au’s Gettable that the club is committed to bringing in a new player during this draft cycle.
Rosa highlighted that the team has a vacancy due to Jaiden Hunter being placed on the inactive list. As a result, they will be taking a pick in the mid-season draft. “We’ve been diligently scouting nationwide to find the right talent,” Rosa said. “Our goal is to find a medium to long-term player who can address current needs while contributing to the team’s future.”
In recent years, Essendon’s mid-season selections have included emerging midfielder Sam Durham, small forward Jye Menzie, and Massimo D’Ambrosio, who is now with Hawthorn. These selections have proven beneficial for the team, and the Bombers hope to replicate this success with their upcoming pick.
Rosa, who took on his role at Essendon last September, has a background as a former player with West Coast and Gold Coast. His extensive experience in recruitment and list management has equipped him well for his current responsibilities. He noted, “I’ve been preparing for this role for over a decade, gaining experience with recruiting and list management teams during my playing career.”
The Bombers’ transition process includes long-time recruiting boss Adrian Dodoro and recently added scout Rohan O’Brien, who joined from West Coast. Rosa expressed gratitude for the mentorship and support within the team, which has allowed him to focus on assessing talent and making informed decisions.
Essendon has started the season strong, currently sitting third on the ladder after a recent win against Greater Western Sydney. Despite their impressive form, Rosa emphasized that the list is still relatively young and the club is continuously evaluating player potential and versatility. “We’re aware of the growth potential in our young list and are constantly assessing where players can contribute most effectively,” he said.
As the mid-season rookie draft approaches, the Bombers are poised to make strategic decisions that will enhance their squad’s depth and future prospects.
