Leyton Orient have announced via their website that centre-back Dan Happe has signed a new two-year contract extension with the club, which will last until the summer of 2026. Dan, now 25, joined The O’s at the age of 14 and worked his way up through the various youth levels, gaining his scholar and subsequently a professional contract with the club.
The six-foot-five defender made his debut in the 16/17 season, losing 3-0 against Cambridge United. His breakthrough came in Orient’s maiden season in the National League, where he played 26 games and helped the O’s finish in mid-table. The following season, he played a vital role, appearing in the final 17 games as the Orioles won the National League title under Justin Edinburgh. He has now made over 200 appearances for the O’s first team and won a second league title in Sky Bet League Two during the 22/23 season.
Speaking to the club’s media team, Happe stated, “Leyton Orient means a lot to me and is like a second home.” I still enjoy playing for the club and working every day, so signing was a no-brainer for me.” “I’ve seen the highs and lows here, and it feels like we’re in a really good spot now.
Next season is all about improvement, and I was delighted when the manager signed his new deal. His signing was a key reason I did, too, because I believe we work well together.”
Richie Wellens, the head coach, also spoke with the club’s media. “I’m delighted that Happs has signed a new deal with us. He is an excellent defender and a wonderful person. Quality left-footed centre-backs are in high demand in the game, and we’re fortunate to have two of them in him and Jack Simpson.
“In addition to guarding, Happs is an important aspect of how we play on the ball. He starts several of our attacks with his distribution from the back. He can still improve, and I’d like him to be more aggressive next season and score a goal or two.
Is this a good move for Leyton Orient?
This was the one player, I didn’t want the club to let go. Defenders who are left-footed, as well as possess the frame and technical ability as Dan are very hard to come by at this level. Dan has shown great maturity, especially over the last couple of seasons and has become a real leader from the back, and was a huge miss at the back end of last season. Hopefully, he can stay fit and play a big part in the upcoming season.
