Hibs Eyeing Marvin Ekpiteta for Defensive Reinforcement

Hibernian FC, under the new management of David Gray, is setting sights on bolstering their defense with the addition of Marvin Ekpiteta. The 28-year-old defender, who recently parted ways with English League One club Blackpool, is now a free agent and a prime target for the Edinburgh-based team.

Ekpiteta, standing at an impressive 6ft 4in, played a pivotal role in Blackpool’s promotion to the Championship in his debut season. His stellar performances earned him the club’s Player of the Year award in his second season at Bloomfield Road. Over three seasons, he amassed over 140 appearances for Blackpool before deciding to seek new challenges.

David Gray, keen to fortify his squad after losing key defenders Paul Hanlon and Will Fish (who returned to Manchester United after his loan spell), views Ekpiteta as a valuable addition. The former Nigeria U-20 international’s experience and defensive prowess are exactly what Gray needs to strengthen Hibernian’s backline ahead of his inaugural season as head coach.

In addition to Ekpiteta, Gray is also considering Warren O’Hora, formerly of MK Dons, as another defensive option. O’Hora, like Ekpiteta, is a free agent and has drawn interest from clubs south of the border. Bournemouth’s Owen Bevan is also on Gray’s radar, potentially rejoining on loan after an injury-plagued spell that prevented him from making any appearances following his January move from the Cherries.

Ekpiteta’s career began in non-league football, with stints at East Thurrock, Concord Rangers, and Chelmsford City, before he made his mark in the EFL with Leyton Orient, aiding their promotion from the National League. His experience in both lower and upper tiers of English football, coupled with his international appearances for Nigeria U-20 and England C, make him a seasoned and versatile defender.

As Hibs look to rebuild and strengthen their squad, Ekpiteta’s signing could prove to be a crucial step in ensuring a solid defensive lineup for the upcoming season.
