ESPN Shakes Up 2024 WNBA Awards Race with Unexpected Twist in Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese Rivalry

Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark has long been considered the frontrunner for the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award, with her only serious competitor being the Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese. However, there’s a possibility ESPN may overlook both of them, instead favoring another rising star from the Fever: Aliyah Boston.

The debate over the best rookie of the 2024 season has centered around Clark and Reese, who have continued their heated rivalry from college into the professional arena. As both 22-year-olds have battled for dominance, Reese’s season-ending injury and Clark’s MVP-worthy performances seemed to make the race clear. Yet, ESPN appears to be shifting attention toward Boston, another standout from the Fever.

Boston, though not receiving the same level of acclaim as Reese, has been quietly putting up strong numbers. With averages of 14.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game, she’s earned praise for her consistent performance, including 11 double-doubles and seven games where she scored 20+ points. Her contributions have been crucial to the Fever’s playoff qualification, though Clark’s dominant late-season form still sets her apart.

Clark’s stats, particularly since the All-Star break, have been staggering. She’s averaging 19.5 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game. Her standout performances include 35 points against the Dallas Wings and 31 points against the Chicago Sky, cementing her role as a game-changer for Indiana.

As the Fever gear up for the playoffs, starting September 22, they’ll aim to regain momentum following recent struggles. Their final regular-season game against the Washington Mystics on September 19 offers the perfect opportunity to head into the postseason on a high note.
