Daniel Tupou Seeks New Deal with Roosters as Coach…

Daniel Tupou is in discussions to extend his tenure with the Sydney Roosters, aiming to provide stability for the club amidst significant departures. As the 33-year-old winger approaches a potential retirement, he remains eager to continue playing, driven by a desire to avoid idle time on the golf course and to support his family.

Tupou was initially expected to retire or play overseas after this season. However, with key players Joseph Manu and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii moving to rugby, and veterans Luke Keary and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves exiting the club, the Roosters are keen for Tupou to stay on for another year. Although a new deal has not yet been finalized, Tupou is optimistic about reaching an agreement soon.

“I’m still in the middle of it getting sorted, so I’ll leave it with my manager and hopefully it’s sorted soon,” Tupou said. “I want to continue, but we’ll see what happens. Family is why I want to keep going. I don’t have a choice, I guess. I’ve just got to keep turning up to training and playing and make the most of every opportunity I get.”

The Roosters’ lineup has seen numerous changes, with Tupou set to play alongside a new center after Junior Pauga’s four-game suspension for a high tackle. The team is also without Suaalii due to his own suspension, but they have rallied around Pauga during this challenging time.

“It was a tough moment and he was a bit rattled after the game, but the boys came around and supported him really well so he’s all right today,” Tupou said. “I just had to comfort him and be supportive and show that we’re there for him to make sure he’s all right.”

As the Roosters prepare to face the Tigers on Sunday, they will also be celebrating coach Trent Robinson’s 300th match in charge. Robinson, who took over in 2013 and has led the team to three premierships, has been a significant mentor and friend to Tupou.

“He hasn’t changed much,” Tupou said of Robinson. “He’s been a great mentor to me, a great coach and a friend off the field. It’s an honor to be part of his milestone. He makes you feel safe and gives you all the details on how to perform on the field every week. He’s one of those father figures who you don’t want to disappoint.”
