The Indiana Fever seem to be finding their footing, while the Las Vegas Aces are looking more like their championship selves — and the two teams are set for a fun matchup Tuesday in Sin City.

The Fever have won five of their last seven games and earned their first victory over a team with a winning record Sunday against the Mercury, whereas the Aces are riding a league-best four-game winning streak that includes victories over the Storm and Sun.

Teams that get the top pick in the draft are not supposed to be very good, and in part because of a brutal stretch of games to begin the season, the Fever were not. However, as the slate has lightened, the players have gotten more comfortable with each other. Suddenly, this is a dangerous bunch.

Rookie sensation Caitlin Clark gets the headlines with her seemingly limitless range and pinpoint passing ability, but it’s actually Kelsey Mitchell who leads the team in scoring. In her seventh year, Mitchell is averaging 16.3 points per game. Most recently, she totaled 16 in a win over the Mercury, with all of the points coming in the second half.

As for Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft has displayed an all-around game, impacting her team as a scorer, passer and rebounder. Averaging 16.2 points, 6.9 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game, Clark’s long-distance 3s have a way of energizing the team.

Aliyah Boston and NaLyssa Smith are also averaging in double figures with 13.1 and 11.8 points, respectively. The top pick in the 2023 draft, Boston has provided a strong post presence while averaging 8.3 rebounds per game.

It’s probably safe to say the Aces, the defending WNBA champions, are back. A slow start has given way to an impressive stretch, and it’s no surprise that A’ja Wilson has led the way.

The MVP candidate is averaging 26.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game while also collecting 1.9 steals and 2.3 blocks. She scored just 11 points in Saturday’s win over the Mystics, but prior to that had scored at least 21 points in every game she’s played this season, getting to at least 30 five times.

Playing with the fastest pace in the WNBA, the Aces also get 18.9 points per game from Jackie Young and 17.3 points per outing from Kelsey Plum. The return of Chelsea Gray, the “Point Gawd,” coincided with the team’s winning streak, which is likely not a coincidence. Returning from a foot injury, Gray is averaging 8.8 points, four rebounds and 4.3 assists per game but exploded for 22 points in Saturday’s win.

For as good as the Aces are offensively, averaging the most points in the league while posting the second-best Offensive Rating, their defense is more on the average side. Vegas is allowing more points than all but four teams at 84.1 per game.

The Fever are coming off an emotional win on the road in which they got down early, came back and then hung on to win. It was an impressive performance from the young team and served as a reminder of what they are capable of. On the flip side, the Aces are looking more and more like the team that won the championship last season with a superstar-led team that is finally healthy.

It’s a game featuring plenty of stars, both current and budding. One of them, Wilson, is likely to have a big game. But the FanDuel total for her rebounds is set at 11.5, and that’s a mark she’s hit just twice in the last nine games. The Fever just held Brittney Griner to just six boards.
