The Sydney Swans are poised to extend the contract of promising young midfielder Matt Roberts following his impressive form this season. Although Roberts is already signed for the next season, the club plans to add two more years to his contract, securing his place with the Swans until the end of 2027.
Roberts, 20, has had a remarkable season, participating in 12 of the 13 games and establishing himself as a crucial part of the Swans’ half-back line. His outstanding performance in Round 1, where he made 19 disposals and eight marks against Melbourne, earned him a Rising Star nomination. Originally drafted as a midfielder, Roberts has adapted brilliantly to his new role, becoming an integral player in coach John Longmire’s strategy.
Tom Seccull, Roberts’ manager, discussed the contract negotiations on AFL.com.au’s trade and draft show, Gettable. Seccull highlighted that discussions with the club have been ongoing for about a month and are nearing completion. “We’re just putting some finishing touches on that, which is great for Matty,” he remarked.
The Sydney Swans have been actively managing their player contracts this season, securing several unrestricted and restricted free agents, along with out-of-contract players. Notable among these is Will Hayward, who recently signed a new five-year deal. Key forward Logan McDonald, who is attracting significant interest from Western Australian clubs, is next on the priority list for the Swans. His decision at the end of the season could require substantial trade capital.
In April, the Swans also secured Errol Gulden, one of the AFL’s top young talents, with a four-year extension, ensuring he remains with the team until at least 2029. As the season progresses, the club now focuses on a few remaining unrestricted free agents, including Harry Cunningham, Sam Reid, and Robbie Fox. Other players such as Aaron Francis, Caleb Mitchell, and Logan McDonald are also currently out of contract.
The Sydney Swans’ proactive approach in managing player contracts reflects their commitment to maintaining a strong and competitive team. With young stars like Matt Roberts continuing to develop, the future looks bright for the Swans.
