Charlton Athletic eye Premier League coup as Birmingham City prepare to lose £4m hotshot
Nathan Jones may attempt to lure a former player to The Valley this summer.
Charlton Athletic are hoping to progress up the division next season after a drastic change in fortune following Nathan Jones’ arrival at The Valley earlier this year.
Recruitment will be looking to compete at the opposite end of the table next season, with Jones hired as a manager rather than a head coach to stretch his negotiation muscle during the window.
Your Monday League One round-up includes the Addicks and Birmingham City.
Charlton Athletic linked with Premier League midfielder
Charlton Athletic are considering a deal for Luton Town midfielder Luke Berry this summer in an effort to reunite the Premier League star with Nathan Jones.
This season, the Hatters star made 17 top-flight appearances, mostly as a substitute for Rob Edwards’ side, scoring two goals and providing an assist. Berry has been released by the club following relegation and is now a free agency target for Championship and League One clubs.
According to Darren Witcoop, newly promoted Oxford United are also interested in signing the midfielder, who won League One with Luton Town in 2019 and the Championship play-offs last season.
Berry is a player Jones is familiar with, but whether the prospect of working with the Welshman again is enough to entice the star to drop down to the third tier, especially with Championship offers on the table, remains to be seen.
Birmingham City star wants transfer
Jordan James, a Birmingham City star, wants to leave the club this summer after being relegated to League One.
According to BirminghamWorld, the 10-time Wales international has been linked with Premier League and Europa League winners Atalanta.
Wolves and Crystal Palace are two Premier League clubs who have been connected with the 19-year-old in recent seasons. Meanwhile, West Ham have joined the race, with Julen Lopetegui a fan of the player, while freshly promoted Leicester City are also intrigued.
Birmingham City rejected Atalanta’s £4 million proposal for James in January, despite the player’s willingness to leave, and could attempt to drive a hard bargain in the forthcoming window.
