All the possible outcomes before the final WSL game as Chelsea gets ready to face Manchester United at Old Trafford
Chelsea can give manager Emma Hayes a dream farewell by winning their fifth consecutive Women’s Super League (WSL) title this weekend.
Hayes, set to become the manager of the US Women’s National Team this summer, is close to securing her seventh league title with Chelsea. The Blues currently lead the WSL on goal difference, marking a remarkable turnaround after Hayes nearly conceded the title following a surprising defeat to Liverpool two weeks ago.
However, Manchester City’s loss to Arsenal four days later gave Chelsea another chance. The Blues have since climbed back to the top of the WSL with consecutive wins over Bristol City and Tottenham Hotspur.
Both Chelsea and City are tied at 52 points, but Hayes’ team has a better goal difference (+47 compared to City’s +45). Therefore, Chelsea only needs to match City’s result on Saturday afternoon to secure the trophy.
Chelsea arguably have the tougher match as they face fifth-place Manchester United at Old Trafford. Although the Blues have never lost to United in the WSL, Marc Skinner’s team eliminated them from the FA Cup last month and went on to win the final against Tottenham Hotspur.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will play Aston Villa at Villa Park, with Gareth Taylor’s side having won the previous encounter 2-1 in December. If both teams win, City must outscore Chelsea’s margin of victory by at least three goals. If both teams lose, City must lose by three goals fewer than Chelsea.
If both teams finish with the same goal difference, the title will be decided by who scored the most goals, with Chelsea currently six goals ahead. If they are still tied, the title will be determined by their head-to-head record, where City have the advantage after a 1-0 win at Chelsea in February and a 1-1 draw at home in October.
