Warrington Wolves skipper George Williams will miss this Saturday’s crucial top-of-the-table clash with Wigan Warriors after receiving a one-match suspension from the RFL’s Match Review Panel.
Williams was banned after being charged with Grade B Dangerous Contact during the Wire’s win over Catalans Dragons on Saturday afternoon.
His offense was on the higher end of the grading scale, therefore instead of a £250 fine, he will be barred from playing in this Saturday’s massive match between the Wolves and the Warriors.
The Wolves have until 12pm on Tuesday to decide whether or not to appeal, but with the Challenge Cup final the following week, any frivolous challenge might result in the England captain missing Wembley entirely.
The Match Review Panel charged six players with Grade B offenses during the weekend, but Williams was the only one banished. Frankie Halton and Brad Dwyer of the Leigh Leopards have been charged with Dangerous Contact and Tripping, respectively. However, the couple were only fined £250, escaping a ban.
Castleford Tigers forward George Griffin was also fined £250 for a Dangerous Contact charge in a win against Hull FC, and London Broncos skipper Will Lovell received the same punishment.
Leeds Rhinos winger Luis Roberts was also charged with Grade B Dangerous Contact and fined £250. On Monday, it was also confirmed that Hull forward Herman Ese’sese will no longer face a tribunal after a complaint of verbal abuse against him was “unequivocally withdrawn”.
Ese’ese was charged following Hull’s recent defeat to the London Broncos and could face a lengthy ban if proved guilty.
However, he has now been cleared, so he will not be attending the tribunal on Tuesday evening.
