Several horses that endured the recent tornado in Claremore are now back on track, participating in races in Tulsa this summer. The tornado, which escalated from an EF2 to EF3 on May 25, caused significant damage to Will Rogers Downs, where many horses were stabled. Despite some injuries and escapes, efforts led by Cindy Dunlap swiftly relocated the horses to Tulsa’s Expo Square within a week.
Among those making a comeback is Free Loading Sistah, who competed for the first time on June 6, securing third place despite minor injuries from debris. Cindy Dunlap, overseeing their recovery, noted the challenges of transitioning from a racetrack environment to a training center. She highlighted the careful care and specific treatments, like using mud poultice to cool and tighten the horses’ legs post-exercise.
- Reflecting on the adaptation process, Dunlap acknowledged the differences in preparing horses for racing outside a dedicated racetrack setting. Nevertheless, she remains optimistic about their performance this season. Fair Meadows, where the races take place every Wednesday and Thursday, offers free admission to the public, encouraging community support for the resilient horses and their ongoing journey to full recovery.
