Millwall and Montenegro goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has tragically passed away at the age of 26. Sarkic, who had a brief loan spell at Wigan Athletic during the 2017/18 season, reportedly fell ill at an apartment in Budva, Montenegro on Saturday morning.
Millwall confirmed the devastating news, expressing their condolences to Sarkic’s family and friends. Sarkic, who began his career at Anderlecht’s academy before moving to Aston Villa in 2015, had loan spells at various clubs including Wigan, Stratford, and Livingston. He joined Wolves in 2020 and had subsequent loan stints at Shrewsbury, Birmingham, and Stoke, before signing with Millwall last August, where he made 33 appearances.
The Montenegro Football Association also mourned his sudden passing, highlighting his contributions to the national team since his debut in 2019. Sarkic had recently been on international duty for a friendly against Belgium.
Former clubs, including Aston Villa and Birmingham, along with the wider football community, have paid tribute to Sarkic, reflecting on his career and the profound loss felt by his untimely death.
