Reports have surfaced indicating that Tottenham Hotspur’s £40m offer for Ivan Toney, a prime target for Manchester United, has been turned down by fellow Premier League club Brentford.
Toney, who showcased his talent with 20 goals in the previous Premier League season for Brentford, is now attracting attention from multiple top-flight clubs and is expected to depart during this summer’s transfer window.
Despite missing a significant portion of the 2023/24 season due to a betting-related ban, the England international returned to action earlier this year. His performance, however, was mixed, with only four goals in 17 Premier League appearances.
The 28-year-old striker has emerged as a top priority for Manchester United, who are keen to bolster their attacking lineup alongside Rasmus Hojlund. However, competition from other Premier League rivals complicates United’s pursuit.
Tottenham’s interest in Toney stems from their need to find a replacement for Harry Kane, who departed for Bayern Munich last year. While Spurs secured Brennan Johnson’s services for around £50m, they are now eyeing Toney as a proven and relatively affordable option.
According to sources, Tottenham has agreed to personal terms with Toney, but Brentford’s asking price of £65m poses a hurdle. Negotiations are ongoing, with Spurs aiming to strengthen their squad significantly for next season’s campaign, including a push for Champions League qualification.
