Stockport County FC has made headlines with a world-record TV deal worth £203 million, and they’re not stopping there. The club has ambitious plans for expanding Edgeley Park, aiming to increase the stadium’s capacity from 10,852 to 18,305. This expansion is a key part of their strategy to support their rise in English football, having recently secured the League Two championship.
The club has submitted a hybrid planning application for a phased expansion of the stadium. The first phase includes the expansion and enhancement of the North Stand (Danny Bergara Stand) and East Stand (Railway End). The North Stand will see an addition of around 600 seats, boosting its capacity to approximately 3,312 seats. The East Stand’s capacity will increase significantly, from 1,366 to about 4,449 seats.
Subject to planning permission, the work on the North Stand’s eastern extension is expected to commence in early 2025, without disrupting the current seating arrangements for fans. Additionally, the South Stand will be redeveloped to accommodate around 5,500 seats and include new food, beverage, and hospitality facilities. The final element of the plan includes a western extension to the North Stand, adding another 600 seats.
The expansion project also includes formalizing the long-term use of Bergara Close for coach parking, which is currently in use on a temporary basis. This comprehensive plan has been prepared by Asteer, following two rounds of public consultation. The club has received overwhelming support from the local community and fans for their vision for Edgeley Park.
The phased approach to these improvements ensures that the growth of the stadium is sustainable and aligns with the club’s on-field success and league requirements as they aim for a return to Championship football. The expansion is projected to boost annual stadium attendance by approximately 150,000, bringing an estimated £2 million per year in economic benefits to neighboring businesses and supporting new jobs and growth in the borough.
Stockport County’s bold plans demonstrate their commitment to fostering a thriving football community and contributing positively to the local economy. This expansion marks a significant milestone in their journey towards achieving greater success and solidifying their presence in higher tiers of English football.
