Stephanie White is the latest figure to address the viral Angel Reese selfie controversy, which ultimately led to the deactivation of Reese’s Instagram account. White shared her perspective on the matter during a recent discussion on her platform.
“What’s undeniable is how Caitlin Clark has managed her public image. With Angel Reese, there are moments where you find yourself questioning her choices, like that particular photo,” White remarked, referring to the bold outfit Reese wore for her New Year’s Eve celebration.
“She’s an incredibly talented and confident young woman, and there are many remarkable women in the WNBA. But if you’re going to lean into that type of imagery, it becomes challenging to later push back against being objectified. People are going to struggle to reconcile that,” White elaborated.
“When you make choices that intentionally draw attention in that way, it invites scrutiny, especially when comparisons are inevitably drawn to Caitlin Clark, who has taken a different approach to her public persona,” White added, further contrasting Reese with the Indiana Fever star.
Following the backlash and her account deactivation, Reese subtly addressed the situation by reposting a tweet from Grammy-winner SZA, emphasizing self-empowerment and living authentically. This isn’t the first time Reese has had to confront commentary on her appearance from figures in sports media. In past podcast discussions and interviews, Reese has spoken candidly about the hyper-sexualization of her body and her frustration with the double standards she continues to face.
