Minister of Sports Development John Enoh has praised Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan, the world record holder, for her exceptional display at the Jamaica Athletics Invitational.
Amusan secured victory in the women’s 100m hurdles with an impressive time of 12.40 seconds, achieving a season’s best.
Amid stiff competition, the 27-year-old hurdler surpassed Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, who finished with a time of 12.46 seconds, and Christina Clemons from the United States, who secured third place in 12.54 seconds.
The sports minister, in a post on his X (formerly Twitter), congratulated Amusan for her outstanding performance, emphasizing her role in instilling hope for Nigeria’s success at the upcoming Paris Olympics.
“Tobi, you continue to elevate our nation’s stature. With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, your achievements inspire confidence, signaling Nigeria’s readiness to overcome challenges. Keep shining, we are immensely proud of you,” the sports minister stated on his X account.
Having recently established a new African record in the 60m hurdles event, Amusan consistently sets new benchmarks in athletics. With her latest feat, she has surpassed American athlete Tonea Marshall to claim the world lead.
The Jamaica Athletics Invitational, acknowledged as a Continental Tour-Silver meet, provided Amusan with a platform to demonstrate her prowess on the global stage.
As the reigning World, Commonwealth, and African record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Amusan shoulders the aspirations of the Nigerian contingent for Olympic triumph.
With the Olympics set to commence on July 26 at France’s national stadium, Amusan’s remarkable performances serve as a beacon of hope for her fellow athletes and the entire nation.
