South Shields has kicked off their summer transfer activities by securing former Hartlepool United winger, Coleby Shepherd, for the upcoming National League North season. This move marks the first signing under the new permanent head coach, Elliott Dickman, who has signed Shepherd on a one-year deal.
The 22-year-old winger makes his debut in the National League North after four seasons with Whitby Town in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. Shepherd began his football career in the Hartlepool United academy and initially joined Whitby Town on loan in January 2020. His performance during this period led to a permanent transfer that summer. Throughout his time with Whitby, Shepherd gained valuable first-team experience through loan spells with North Shields and Newton Aycliffe in the Ebac Northern League.
Shepherd is determined to help South Shields achieve a historic promotion to the National League. Reflecting on his decision to join, he expressed his ambitions: “I aim to reach the highest level possible and contribute to the club’s success. After speaking with the coach, it became clear that the goal is either automatic promotion or making the playoffs. This aligns perfectly with my personal targets, and I am ready to give my all to help the team.”
The Mariners narrowly missed out on a play-off spot last season, and Shepherd’s addition aims to strengthen the squad’s bid for promotion. He will have the opportunity to face his former club, Hartlepool, during South Shields’ pre-season schedule. The pre-season fixtures also include matches against Newcastle United Under-21s, Shildon, and Sunderland, alongside the annual Sam Bartram Cup where a Mariners XI will play against Boldon CA.
Shepherd’s signing is a significant step for South Shields as they prepare for their second season in the National League North. The club and its supporters are hopeful that his experience and drive will play a pivotal role in achieving their promotion aspirations.
