The Indiana Fever have made a clear commitment to building their team around star point guard Caitlin Clark. Along with re-signing All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell, the Fever have made key roster moves by adding experienced forwards DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard. To strengthen their perimeter shooting, they also brought in guard Sophie Cunningham.
Cunningham joined the Fever in a multi-team trade with the Phoenix Mercury, which saw Indiana send forward NaLyssa Smith and their 2025 first-round pick in exchange. Known for her sharpshooting, Cunningham boasts a career three-point percentage of 36.2%. Though her numbers dipped slightly in 2024, she still contributed an average of 8.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.
During an interview on Sports and Shenanigans with Jillian Carroll Letrinko, Cunningham shared her excitement about teaming up with Clark. She even made a playful reference to pop stars while expressing her support for the young star:
“I told the people upstairs that I’ll be the Sabrina Carpenter to her Taylor Swift any day,” Cunningham said. “I’m so excited for this opportunity. She’s an incredible person who handles the pressure and attention so gracefully. Plus, she passes the ball, which I love.”
Clark has not only seen significant changes to her team’s roster but also in its leadership. After falling to the Connecticut Sun in the first round of the WNBA playoffs, Indiana decided to part ways with head coach Christie Sides after two seasons. The Fever then brought in 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year Stephanie White—the very coach who had eliminated them from the postseason.
With these major moves, the Fever have given fans plenty to look forward to in the 2025 season.
