Sheffield United’s takeover scenario may allow for an instant return of a leaving player.
Ben Osborn could still be given a return to Sheffield United this summer. According to Alan Nixon, the 29-year-old might make an unexpected comeback to Bramall Lane despite supposedly heading for the departure before his contract expired.
Osborn’s contract with the Yorkshire club will expire in June, marking the end of his five-year stint there.
The versatile player joined Sheffield United from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2019 and played over 100 games for the club during that time.
Sheffield United claimed on its official retained list earlier this week that talks with Osborn and a number of other out-of-contract players were underway, but Nixon reported over a week ago that the Blades were planning to let the left-footed midfielder leave.
Ben Osborn’s Sheffield United future
It was reported earlier this week that an American consortium is in talks with Sheffield United about a possible takeover.
It is anticipated that if a deal is concluded soon, Osborn may be able to return to the club.
Prior to his release, Osborn was scheduled to earn a one-year contract extension with the Blades. However, the club’s financial woes necessitated cuts, which might be reversed if new owners invest in the side.
It remains to be seen how far Sheffield United’s buyout talks will progress, as no agreement has been reached.
However, supporters would welcome the development, as the squad is trying to compete financially with its rivals.
Despite being promoted to the Premier League last summer, the club was unable to invest heavily in order to upgrade the first-team roster in preparation for their return to the top tier.
This resulted in a difficult campaign that saw them relegated down to the Championship, although a takeover might assist fund a promotion back to the first flight at the first try.
Chris Wilder will be hoping to keep Ben Osborn at Sheffield United
Retaining Osborn could enhance Chris Wilder’s chances of finishing in the top two next season.
The veteran coach will be hoping to have transfer funds available this summer so that he can assemble a team capable of competing for promotion. Sheffield United’s Daniel Jebbison Leeds United is keen on
Osborn made 24 Premier League appearances last season as the squad ended last in the table. He has made frequent appearances since signing from Nottingham Forest, proving to be an important player of the club.
However, his future is up in the air as Sheffield United decided not to renew his contract, allowing him to negotiate terms with other clubs.
