Sheffield United has expressed interest in signing former Newcastle United players Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie to bolster their squad.
Contact with the players’ representatives began in late June and early July, but the focus on completing other deals has delayed further progress.
Recently, Sheffield United secured the signings of Kieffer Moore and Callum O’Hare, adding to their earlier acquisitions of defender Sam McCallum and midfielder Jamie Shackleton, bringing their pre-season recruitment tally to four.
Dummett and Ritchie, both released by Newcastle at the season’s end after making over 200 appearances each, have found opportunities limited following the club’s high-profile takeover. Despite their ages—Ritchie turning 35 this season—Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder sees the value in their experience to support a young squad that has lost several key figures in recent years. Dummett’s versatility as a central defender or left back, and Ritchie’s ability as a winger or wing back, would provide the tactical flexibility Wilder seeks for the upcoming season.
In addition to pursuing Dummett and Ritchie, Sheffield United remains in negotiations with Peterborough United over Harrison Burrows. Meanwhile, there is still concern about Jayden Bogle’s potential departure, with Leeds United maintaining interest in the full-back despite having two bids rejected.
