Salford Red Devils have signed Alex Gerrard on a one-year contract.
The seasoned prop began his career with the Widnes Vikings, where he spent eight years from 2010 to 2018, before relocating to Australia to play for the Mackay Cutters. Gerrard then returned to the UK in 2020 to join Leigh Centurions.
“I want to be consistent in my performances and contribute positively to the group.”
When asked about joining Salford, Gerrard said, “There’s a solid group here at Salford, and I’m looking forward to working hard to get into the 17.
Gerrard knows assistant coach Kurt Haggerty well from his time at Widnes, where he played for two seasons. Haggerty was also an assistant coach at Leigh Centurions before becoming head coach, and Gerrard played for them.
“I’ve known Kurt (Haggerty) since I started out at Widnes. It’s always good to meet familiar faces, and I’m looking forward to working with Kurt again.
Kurt Haggerty, Salford Red Devils’ assistant coach, remarked, “It’s great to be working with Alex again.” His ability as a front rower, as well as his work ethic, will greatly benefit the team in the future. I and it’s terrific to have him on board in 2022.”
Head coach Paul Rowley said, “I’m really pleased to add Alex to the squad; he has a lot of experience at the top level and will add much needed depth and competition to the team, which we all know will be critical this season.
“One of our strengths at Salford is the team spirit and Alex will fit in very well.” Ian Blease, Director of Rugby and Operations, added: “It’s fantastic to bring Alex in with his wealth of first-team experience, and he will now add some depth and strength to our pack for the upcoming season.”
