The Rugby Football League (RFL) has announced a significant restructuring of the Challenge Cup, set to take effect from the 2025 season. The revamped format will see all 12 Super League clubs entering the competition at the third round stage, marking a departure from previous years.
Beginning in January, the Challenge Cup will kick off with two initial rounds involving 10 National Conference League clubs and 22 community game teams. This early stage aims to foster inclusivity and engagement across various levels of rugby league.
The draw for the third round will also be conducted in January, well ahead of the Super League season, with a strategic focus on building excitement and momentum leading up to the prestigious Finals Day in June.
One of the key changes includes seeding the third round draw to ensure each Super League club faces an away fixture against one of the 20 victorious second round teams. This alteration aims to provide clubs outside the top flight a greater opportunity to host high-profile matches.
Moving forward, the competition will progress with the fourth round in March, quarter-finals in April, and semi-finals scheduled for May 10-11. The winners will then enjoy a four-week preparation period for the Challenge Cup Final, slated to return to Wembley Stadium on June 7.
Rhodri Jones, managing director of RL Commercial, expressed optimism about the new structure, highlighting its potential to enhance the competitiveness and appeal of the Challenge Cup. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the Cup’s traditions while adapting to modern demands and opportunities within the sport.
With the Women’s Challenge Cup Final also set to grace Wembley Stadium alongside the main event on June 7, discussions are ongoing regarding the optimal format for the Wheelchair Challenge Cup Final scheduled for May 31.
The RFL’s decision follows extensive consultations with clubs and stakeholders, aiming to elevate the profile and prestige of the Betfred Challenge Cup while ensuring its enduring relevance and excitement for fans and participants alike.
