Rotherham United Faces Disappointment in Transfer Chase for Jordan Williams

ItRotherham United is facing a significant setback in their pursuit of Barnsley full-back Jordan Williams. The team had shown strong interest in Williams, who became a free agent this summer after Barnsley’s failed bid to exit League One. However, recent developments suggest that Rotherham may not secure their target.

Reports from The News in Portsmouth indicate that Portsmouth, who have taken Rotherham’s place in the Championship, are now keen on signing Williams. Cardiff City, another Championship side, is also in the running for the 24-year-old defender. With two higher-tier clubs expressing interest, Rotherham’s chances of landing Williams appear slim.

Williams, who spent six seasons with Barnsley, is looking for a new challenge after being released this summer. During his time at Oakwell, he made 201 appearances and scored nine goals, playing a key role in their promotion from League One in the 2018-19 season. Despite his contributions, Barnsley’s relegation in 2021 led to his release as the club undergoes a rebuild under new manager Darrell Clarke.

Barnsley has already begun their reconstruction, signing midfielder Conor Hourihane from Derby County, a former Barnsley player who was released after Derby’s promotion to the Championship.

Rotherham United’s manager Steve Evans, known for his aggressive approach in the transfer market, has already secured seven new players, including Sean Raggett and Joe Rafferty from Portsmouth. Despite missing out on Williams, Evans is expected to continue his search for new talent to bolster the squad as they aim to bounce back from their recent relegation.

In conclusion, while Rotherham’s pursuit of Jordan Williams may end in disappointment, the club remains determined to strengthen their roster. Williams, on the other hand, is likely to make a move to a Championship club, continuing his career at a higher level.
