Union University and the broader basketball community are mourning the loss of Warren Olden, affectionately known as “Big O,” who passed away on January 8, 2024, while on duty at the Jackson City Court. Olden, a 1998 Union graduate and esteemed member of the Union Sports Hall of Fame, dedicated 30 years to the Jackson Police Department, embodying unwavering commitment and service.
During his tenure at Union from 1990 to 1994, Olden etched his name into the university’s history books by amassing a record-breaking 2,210 pointsโa milestone that remains unchallenged. His exceptional skills on the court were instrumental in propelling the Bulldogs to a national tournament appearance, underscoring his pivotal role in the team’s success. This remarkable achievement led to his induction into the Union University Sports Hall of Fame in 2010, cementing his legacy as one of the institution’s basketball greats.
Beyond his athletic prowess, Olden was celebrated for his character and the profound impact he had on those around him. Mark Campbell, Union’s Director of Athletics and Head Women’s Basketball Coach, reflected on Olden’s legacy, stating, “Warren was a tremendous player here at Union but he was much more than that. The ‘Big O’ as we all call him was a pillar in this community. He was strong, dependable, and a force but inside that physique he had the biggest heart.”
Steve Beverly, a longtime broadcaster and professor at Union, shared heartfelt memories of Olden, describing him as a “gentle giant” with an infectious smile. He recounted Olden’s consistent kindness and the respect he garnered both on and off the court, emphasizing the void his passing has left in the community.
As the community reflects on Olden’s life, his legacy serves as a testament to dedication, excellence, and heartfelt service. His contributions to Union University and the city of Jackson will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
