Reds admit roster mistake, recall outfielder after tuneup in Triple-A

The Cincinnati Reds really need someone in their lineup to start hitting. Following a 3-7 record on their West Coast road trip, David Bell’s team is in need of a boost.

Perhaps Nick Martini, who was recalled on Tuesday afternoon, can supply that. Conner Capel, who had received limited playing time since being called up, was optioned back to Triple-A Louisville.

Martini was all Cincinnati fans could talk about on Opening Day. In reality, his first week of the 2024 season was a huge success.

However, the left-handed hitter struggled and struck out before the Reds decided to send Martini to Triple-A Louisville.

It was part of a slew of moves earlier this season that saw both Martini and Bubba Thompson sent back to the minors, TJ Friedl was activated off the injured list, and Capel was given a chance — albeit a small one — to prove himself in the big leagues.

But a lot has changed since Martini joined the Louisville Bats a couple of weeks ago.

The Reds signed Mike Ford to a major league contract, and Jacob Hurtubise made his big league debut.

Unfortunately, both of these movements resulted in Friedl and Christian Encarnacion-Stand being placed on the injured list. Martini, on the other hand, took advantage of his time in Derby City to regain his swing.

Marinti appeared lost at the plate, but during his brief stint in Louisville, the 33-year-old hit.364/.563/.818 with three homers, nine walks, and only four strikeouts.

The Reds need to start posting crooked numbers on the scoreboard and winning in the rankings. Martini provides a powerful bat, as well as energy and leadership to the clubhouse, something this team desperately needs.
