The Connecticut Sun announced on Wednesday that Rachid Meziane will be the franchise’s seventh head coach. Meziane, 44, brings a wealth of experience to the team, having coached professionally in France and served as the head coach of the Belgian women’s national team. He takes over from Stephanie White, who left the Sun to become the head coach of the Indiana Fever.
Meziane’s appointment came just one day after the Sun named former WNBA and UConn player Morgan Tuck as their new general manager. Tuck expressed confidence in Meziane’s ability to elevate the team, praising his passion for the game and proven success in both domestic and international basketball. Meziane’s dedication to growing women’s basketball on all levels aligns with the organization’s values and vision for the future.
Before taking the reins at Connecticut, Meziane coached Villeneuve d’Ascq, leading the French club to the Ligue Feminine de Basketball (LFB) Championship and a runner-up finish in the EuroLeague during the 2023-24 season. Additionally, he guided the Belgium national team to victory in the 2023 FIBA EuroBasket, showcasing his ability to inspire success on an international stage.
Meziane expressed his excitement about joining the Sun, a team with a rich history and passionate fan base. He looks forward to working with the talented roster and assembling a coaching staff that can help the team build on its legacy and pursue a championship. The Sun, fresh off a strong 28-12 regular season, were eliminated by the Minnesota Lynx in the semifinals of the playoffs.
This marks an exciting new chapter for the Connecticut Sun as they aim for greater success under Meziane’s leadership.
