Paul Mullin issues Tranmere Rovers comparison ahead of League One return with Wrexham

Wrexham received successive promotions for the first time in club history when Paul Mullin sacked them.

Paul Mullin has drawn comparisons to his stint with Tranmere Rovers following his promotion with Wrexham.

The 29-year-old scored an astounding 26 goals across all competitions, including 14 in his final 12 games, to lead his team to victory. Mullin has already gained promotion to the third tier, with Tranmere Rovers in 2019 and Cambridge United in 2021.

He left Cambridge for Wrexham the second time and fell two divisions because he was sold on Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ idea in Wales.

Fast forward three years, and that decision has shown to be perfect, as the Liverpudlian is back in the third division after scoring over 100 goals for the club.

Mullin only scored four goals for Tranmere during the 2018/2019 season, as the club was promoted to League One.

He then struggled to find any meaningful form in the third tier, scoring only three goals in 20 games.

The Wrexham star attributed his troubles to his side’s difficulty getting going, which ultimately hampered his form. He now considers the circumstances at Wrexham are radically different from his previous experience at this level.

Mullin believes McElhenney and Reynolds’ desire will propel them to prominence next season.

On the Men In Blazers podcast, he stated: “When I was in League One with Tranmere, the conditions were different.

“Tranmere’s promotion does not feel the same as Wrexham. I believe we are on a great path here, with owners that are very motivated to keep going, but I am aware of how difficult the division is.

“I believe when I arrived with Tranmere, we had a really decent side, but we couldn’t get going. We started at the bottom of the standings before I left to attend Cambridge; it was a difficult season.”

Mullin was virtually dismissed at Tranmere, but he has recovered over the following five years and demonstrated his talent as a striker.

Parkinson, the former Bradford City boss, has brought out the best in him, and Lee Trundle believes he has the potential to play in the Championship.

With superior talent around him, there’s no reason he can’t dominate League One and maintain his prolificacy from recent years.

After all, Mullin is one of the most prolific goalscorers in English football. His finishing is flawless, and his overall game has developed dramatically at Wrexham.

Mullin will be fired up to prove those who questioned him at Tranmere wrong by leading his team to the promotion positions.
