Newport County can reveal that club stalwart Scot Bennett will leave this summer once his contract expires.
Bennett joined the club on loan in October 2015 before signing a permanent deal in June 2016.
During his stay in South Wales, the midfielder made 367 appearances for the Exiles and played an important role in the club’s development.
From the remarkable escape to the play-off final at Wembley, the 33-year-old has been a part of some memorable games, and the club wishes him continued success.
Bennett said on social media, “Unfortunately, my time at Newport County has come to an end. As I’ve previously stated, I expected to end my career here, but after 8 incredible seasons, my amber journey is now complete.
“I am honoured and proud to have worn the Newport County AFC shirt 367 times. I captained the club in my first year and again at the end of this season, and I will always be proud of it. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank every manager/coach, backroom personnel, board members, and everyone else connected with the club. To all of the players I’ve had the pleasure of playing with in the past and present, I thank you for the memories, laughter, and, of course, everything we’ve accomplished at this special club.
“Then I must thank you, the fans, the amber army, for embracing me and my family so warmly. We were welcomed from the minute I arrived on loan eight and a half years ago till I signed permanently eight years ago, and we have made this place our home. You allowed and trusted me to represent this club, and I like to think you saw that every time I crossed that line, I gave it my all!
“We’ve shared every emotion possible, gone through all of the ups and downs together, and the club wouldn’t be what it is today without your support both at home and abroad. I’ve had the best memories of my life at this club, whether it’s play-off finals, FA Cup runs, fantastic escapes, or making my childhood ambition of playing Manchester United in my 350th game for the club a reality. WOW! So thank you again for everything you’ve given/done for me.
“I shall always remember my time with you with great honour and pride. I am confident that this is not the end, that our paths will meet again. “Thank you for everything, Benno.”
