Newcastle United is eyeing a potential bargain deal for Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney, who is now available for a significantly reduced fee. Last summer, Newcastle decided against pursuing Tierney after Arsenal demanded £30 million for the Scottish defender. Instead, Tierney spent the 2023-24 season on loan with Real Sociedad in La Liga.
The 27-year-old defender had an injury-troubled stint at Sociedad, making 26 appearances but only starting 14 league matches due to three separate injuries. Despite these setbacks, Tierney remains a valuable asset and has attracted interest from his former club, Celtic, and other potential suitors. Arsenal, looking to offload him, has reportedly lowered their asking price to just £10 million.
Currently with the Scotland national team at Euro 2024, Tierney faces an uncertain future at Arsenal, where he still has two years left on his contract. His potential move to Newcastle, however, seems less likely as the Magpies have already secured the £28 million signing of Chelsea’s Lewis Hall and agreed on a free transfer for Lloyd Kelly, who also plays left-back.
Newcastle’s manager Eddie Howe has a wealth of options for the left-back position, including Dan Burn, Kieran Trippier, Tino Livramento, and Matt Targett. However, the futures of Trippier and Targett are uncertain, with Trippier entering the final year of his contract and attracting interest from Saudi Arabia and Bayern Munich.
While the possibility of signing Tierney remains open, Newcastle’s recent acquisitions suggest they are well-prepared for the upcoming season without needing to add another left-back to their roster. The club’s strategic moves in the transfer market indicate a clear plan to strengthen their squad while maintaining flexibility in their player lineup.
