New Hartlepool United manager Darren Sarll faces a crucial summer of recruitment to ensure success next season. Here are 5 former players he could look to bring back into his fold:
1. James Kellermann
With the departure of Tom Crawford and Callum Cooke, and the uncertain future of Anthony Mancini, Hartlepool urgently needs to bolster their midfield. James Kellermann, who is set to leave Woking this summer, could be a perfect fit. Standing tall and powerful, the 29-year-old midfielder played under Sarll at Woking, making 44 appearances during their successful National League play-off campaign. Though his following season was hampered by injuries, Kellermann’s strong connection with Sarll might persuade him to head to the North East.
2. Rohan Ince
In dire need of an athletic defensive midfielder, Hartlepool might turn to Rohan Ince. Made available for transfer by Woking, Ince was another key player under Sarll, contributing eight goals in 47 appearances during their play-off run. With nearly 100 Championship appearances and standing over six feet tall, Ince’s experience and physicality could provide the robust presence Hartlepool needs in midfield. As a Montserrat international, his inclusion could greatly strengthen Sarll’s squad.
3. Will Jaaskelainen
Hartlepool needs a new goalkeeper, and Will Jaaskelainen might be the answer. Signed by Sarll for Woking in February 2023, Jaaskelainen impressed immediately and earned a new contract. At 25, he is at a prime age for development and has shown his potential after multiple loan spells while at Crewe. Although Woking has offered him a new deal, the promise of first-team football and reuniting with Sarll might lure him to Hartlepool.
4. Billy Sass-Davies
Sarll has shown his trust in Billy Sass-Davies by signing him on loan twice, for Yeovil and Woking. The 24-year-old Welsh defender, who has been loaned out ten times by Crewe, spent the last season at Boreham Wood. With Crewe potentially ending their association with Sass-Davies, his familiarity with Sarll and extensive National League experience could make him a valuable addition to Hartlepool’s defense, offering flexibility in defensive formations.
5. Luke Wilkinson
To further fortify Hartlepool’s defense, Sarll could consider Luke Wilkinson. A seasoned defender, Wilkinson played key roles in Sarll’s teams at both Yeovil and Woking, helping them reach the National League play-offs. Despite Hartlepool already having veteran defenders Tom Parkes and Luke Waterfall, Wilkinson’s impending free-agent status and leadership qualities could add depth and experience to the squad, enhancing their defensive resilience.
Sarll’s familiarity with these players and their proven track records could significantly strengthen Hartlepool United’s squad, setting them up for a competitive season ahead.
