Netflix has announced that it will continue with its Building The Band series, which was in production at the time of Liam Payne’s sudden death. The former One Direction star had been a judge on the show, which features contestants vying to form a band based purely on their musical abilities.
Payne joined fellow judges Nicole Scherzinger from The Pussycat Dolls and Kelly Rowland from Destiny’s Child for Building The Band, a new competition series from Netflix. Production for the show wrapped in the summer, but it was still in post-production when Payne tragically passed away on October 16, 2024. The singer’s death occurred after a fall from a hotel balcony in Argentina, with an official report attributing his death to multiple traumatic injuries.
After the tragedy, there were concerns that the series might be scrapped. However, Netflix has confirmed that it intends to move forward with the project, with plans to release the final product. Sources indicate that conversations are ongoing with Payne’s family to determine how his involvement in the show will be handled. No specific details have been provided yet, but further updates are expected soon.
The show, which was first announced in August 2024, features a unique format where contestants compete to form a band, practicing together in isolation booths where they can hear but not see each other. Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean is also expected to appear in the series, and he had spoken about working with Payne shortly before his passing.
As of now, Netflix has not yet revealed a release date for Building The Band, but it continues to move forward with the production. In the wake of Payne’s death, there have been reports that his One Direction bandmates may reunite to honor him at the upcoming BRIT Awards, further highlighting the deep impact Payne had on the music world.
