Derek McInnes is aiming to secure ‘two or three’ additional signings as Kilmarnock gears up for their crucial Europa League qualifier against Cercle Brugge next month.
The first-team squad returned to Rugby Park today for their initial pre-season session, with new summer recruit Bruce Anderson joining his teammates for the first time.
After yesterday’s European draw, McInnes is focused on ensuring his squad is as competitive as possible for the upcoming two-legged tie.
“We’re working hard to try and get two or three new players,” McInnes told Killie TV. “We’ve identified every position we want to strengthen. We know the players we’re targeting, so it’s not a matter of being undecided. If we can’t get our first choices, we’ll move to the next options.
“There are choices for all the positions we’re targeting, and hopefully, we can make some progress in the next couple of weeks, especially before the game, to bring in a few more players.”
McInnes, 52, was with his son, Charlie, when the Europa League draw took place. While excited about facing Cercle Brugge, he is also preparing for a challenging match.
“Technically, I think Cercle Brugge is a strong team,” he said. “It’s a difficult game for us, but we expected tough opponents regardless of who we drew.
“It’s thrilling to see Kilmarnock in the draw, and our goal is to be as prepared as possible. We know we’re considered underdogs.
“The Belgian league is full of top talent. We have a young squad and didn’t know much about Cercle Brugge before the draw, but by the time the game arrives, we’ll be well aware of their strengths and qualities.”
