Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga is expected to depart the club permanently this summer, and he has emerged as a major target for Millwall after impressing on loan at The Den.
Millwall have reached an agreement with Tottenham to sign defender Japhet Tanganga.
The Spurs player, 25, spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan with the Lions, where he played an important role in helping the club retain Championship status.
Millwall have moved rapidly to reach an agreement with the former England youth international as they look to recruit him on a permanent basis.
Tanganga’s current contract ends in the summer. And, while Tottenham has a one-year option, it appears like the homegrown defender will go.
Millwall will now aim to reach an agreement with Tanganga on personal terms, though they may still face stiff competition for his services. Tanganga was highlighted as a significant summer transfer target for the Lions following his impressive play on loan at The Den.
Tanganga made 18 appearances in all, scoring twice. He had a dismal start to the season on loan at FC Augsburg, as he did not make a single first-team appearance.
Neil Harris, Millwall’s head coach, made no secret of his wish to continue working with Tanganga ahead of last weekend’s Championship final against Swansea City.
Harris told The South London Press: “Japhet has started every game for me, so he’s obviously doing great.
“When discussing loan players under contract with other football clubs, you must be extremely cautious and respectful. Ultimately, Japh gets contracted to Spurs, and they have a relationship and must make decisions on Japhet’s future together.
“I can name players I’ve worked with in the past, such as Jake (Cooper) and Sav (George Saville), who joined us around the same time as Jed Wallace.”
We made all of these loans permanent. “Like some of the other men, we may need to be patient with how long they take to make decisions – both teams and individuals.
