Jadon Sancho has restarted his career at Borussia Dortmund, with a permanent move on the horizon, but Manchester United will demand a high sum, with the youngster also expected to take a significant wage reduction.
Jadon Sancho will have to accept a significant pay cut if he wants to return to Borussia Dortmund permanently this summer, with Manchester United outlining their expectations.
The winger earns £275,000 a week at Old Trafford, but if he wants to return to the German club, where he has been on loan since January, he will not be able to earn anywhere near that amount. United will also not let Sancho go for cheap, having paid £73 million to get him three years ago.
According to The Sun, they will not accept anything less than 75% of their investment, or around £55 million, if they allow Sancho to depart for the Bundesliga.
The 24-year-old has experienced a comeback at his previous club, which he helped take to the Champions League final despite being one of the underdogs in the elimination stages. Dortmund’s current record buy is £35 million for Ousmane Dembele, implying they will not go as high as United demands.
Ten Hag’s position has apparently softened, but the Dutchman’s future in Manchester remains uncertain, with any new manager potentially offering Sancho a way back. Technical director Jason Wilcox and incoming CEO Omar Berrada both worked with him at Manchester City, which may help his chances of resuming his United career.
Sancho was a big success at Dortmund during his debut season, and he quickly became one of Europe’s most sought-after players. At Old Trafford, however, he has failed to deliver regularly, albeit he is not the first player to arrive with a high reputation yet fail to reach the heights expected.
Gary Neville has questioned why so many players, including Sancho, have joined Manchester but only perform when they are away from United. He stated on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet: “You talk about an example of Manchester United, and we’ll get to United later, but Jadon Sancho, he was dreadful at United, let’s be clear.
“His performance level, confidence, and belief. He moves to a different team, and all of a sudden you start to see a player that makes you wonder, ‘How has that happened, why is that happening time and time again’, that players with tremendous reputations come into Old Trafford and just don’t work.”
