Hartlepool United is on the hunt for a new goalkeeper as the club navigates a challenging off-season. Manager Darren Sarll must address the goalkeeping position, which has been a persistent issue for the team. Last season’s mainstay, Ben Killip, moved on to Barnsley after a mixed tenure, leaving a notable gap in the squad. While Killip played a crucial role in the team’s promotion to League Two and made 133 league appearances, his performance in his final season left much to be desired. His departure necessitated the acquisition of Pete Jameson and Joel Dixon, who were expected to solidify the team’s defense.
Initially, the signings seemed promising. Jameson, a promotion winner under Sarll at York, and Dixon, a National League titleholder with Barrow, brought high expectations. Unfortunately, their performances fell short. Dixon, coming off a tough spell at Bolton, struggled to find his footing and was soon relegated to backup status after a costly mistake against Chesterfield. Jameson also faced difficulties but showed significant improvement later in the season under the guidance of Kevin Phillips. His resurgence, marked by three consecutive clean sheets, offered a glimmer of hope for a permanent role.
As the new season approaches, the club must decide whether to retain Jameson or seek fresh talent. The future of Dixon, who is transfer-listed, remains uncertain. A combination of Jameson and a new, experienced goalkeeper might be the solution Hartlepool needs. Among potential candidates is Luke Daniels, a seasoned professional recently released by Forest Green. Despite his age, Daniels boasts an impressive record and could provide the stability needed.
Alternatively, the club could consider younger talents like Dan Langley, who has shown promise at Newcastle and Oldham. Langley’s youth and potential, paired with Jameson’s experience, could form a balanced and effective goalkeeping duo. Another name in the mix is Nathan Ashmore from Boreham Wood, though his relocation to the North East seems unlikely given his longstanding ties to the South.
The team also missed out on Harrison Male, who opted to join York, but other former players could return. Scott Loach, a former fan favorite, and Brad James, who has been performing well post-injury at Spennymoor, are viable options. Local talent Jonathan Mitchell, released by Harrogate, could also be a fit.
Hartlepool cannot afford another season plagued by goalkeeping issues. Strengthening this position is critical for Sarll as he aims to build a robust defense. The search for a new number one and potentially a reliable backup is imperative to set a solid foundation for the upcoming campaign.
