Hartlepool United is in urgent need of strengthening their goalkeeping department this summer. Darren Sarll, the manager, is grappling with a persistent issue that plagued the team throughout the last season. Despite Ben Killip’s memorable final performance against Stockport, his departure to League One’s Barnsley was a relief to many fans. Killip, who made 133 league appearances and played a crucial role in their promotion from the National League, lost favor due to inconsistent performances and poor distribution.
To fill the void left by Killip, Hartlepool brought in Pete Jameson and Joel Dixon. Initially, this seemed like a smart move as it had been a while since the club had two solid goalkeeping options. Jameson, who had previous success under manager John Askey at York, and Dixon, a National League title winner with Barrow, appeared capable of stepping up. However, reality proved more complex. Dixon struggled with confidence issues following a tough spell at Bolton, and his performances did little to inspire confidence. His stint as the starting goalkeeper was marred by mistakes, and he was eventually dropped.
Jameson also had a rough start but improved significantly after being recalled by Kevin Phillips in March. His resurgence was bolstered by the presence of defenders Tom Parkes and Luke Waterfall. Jameson’s late-season performances, including several clean sheets, offered a glimmer of hope. However, it remains to be seen whether his late improvements will be enough to secure a permanent spot.
Looking ahead, Hartlepool might consider adding experienced goalkeeper Luke Daniels, who recently left Forest Green following their relegation. Though his age and recent history as a backup might be drawbacks, his extensive experience could provide stability. Alternatively, they might opt for a younger talent like Dan Langley, a 23-year-old free agent who has shown promise at Newcastle and other local clubs. A combination of Jameson and Langley could balance experience with potential.
Other potential targets include Nathan Ashmore of Boreham Wood, although his reluctance to move far from Portsmouth might be a hindrance. The club also missed out on Harrison Male, who joined York City, but other familiar faces such as Scott Loach, Brad Young, and Brad James might still be viable options. Each brings unique strengths and experiences that could benefit Hartlepool.
Hartlepool United cannot afford to repeat last season’s defensive woes. Strengthening the goalkeeper position is crucial for Sarll as he aims to build a solid foundation for the team. Addressing this need decisively will be key to ensuring a more stable and successful campaign ahead.
