Geelong forward Gryan Miers acknowledges that both his performance and the team’s form have mirrored each other, particularly in the weeks leading up to the mid-season bye. Initially discussed as a potential All-Australian, Miers’ form saw a noticeable decline after the Cats’ impressive 7-0 start to the season.
During the opening seven rounds, Miers was averaging 22 disposals, five inside 50s, and three clearances. However, as Geelong experienced a downturn, winning only one of their next six games, Miers’ numbers dropped to 19 disposals, three inside 50s, and just under two clearances per game. In the three games before the bye, his averages further dipped to 15 disposals, two inside 50s, and one clearance.
“The last three weeks, I wasn’t very proud of my performances, and I think the team feels the same way,” Miers admitted. He emphasized the interconnected nature of individual and team performance, expressing a collective desire to get back on track for the remaining ten weeks of the season.
After a brief break in Tasmania, Miers returns rejuvenated and optimistic about Geelong’s chances of making a strong push towards the finals. He noticed a general fatigue and drop in energy within the team, particularly in their game against Sydney. The break provided a necessary opportunity for the players to recharge.
Confident in his refreshed mindset, Miers believes Geelong can recapture the form that saw them achieve their best start to a season since 2013. The upcoming challenging five-week stretch includes matches against Essendon and Collingwood at the MCG, and home games against Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs at Kardinia Park.
Reflecting on the season’s volatility, Miers noted, “It can change so quickly. We saw seven weeks of near-perfect footy and then a flick of the switch and we lose five of the next six.” He remains hopeful that by staying true to their process, the team can reverse their fortunes.
As Miers prepares to potentially face Alex Cincotta on Friday night, he remains focused on delivering strong performances and helping Geelong climb back up the ladder. With determination and a renewed spirit, Miers and the Cats aim to finish the season on a high note.
