Birmingham City is poised to potentially acquire midfielder Andre Dozzell myon a free transfer following his departure from Queens Park Rangers. QPR has decided not to extend Dozzell’s contract, making him available for new opportunities this summer.
Dozzell, who spent the latter part of the season on loan with Birmingham City, could return if Tony Mowbray resumes his role as manager. Mowbray, who initially brought Dozzell to Birmingham, has long been an admirer of the midfielder. His assistant, Mark Venus, had pursued Dozzell for several years, finally succeeding in bringing him to St Andrew’s.
Mowbray expressed high regard for Dozzell upon his acquisition, highlighting his talent and connection to Ipswich Town, where Dozzell’s father, Jason, also played. Mowbray praised Dozzell’s ability to consistently push forward and create opportunities on the field, envisioning him as a key player in a possession-based team that supporters would appreciate.
Despite these accolades, Dozzell struggled to secure a regular spot under interim boss Gary Rowett toward the end of the season. He appeared in 10 matches for Birmingham City and notably scored the decisive goal against Blackburn Rovers in February. However, his future with the club remains uncertain, contingent on Mowbray’s potential return to the managerial position.
The decision to bring Dozzell back will likely depend on whether Mowbray resumes his leadership at Birmingham City. If Mowbray returns, the path is clear for Dozzell to rejoin the Blues, offering him a fresh start and the chance to fulfill his potential in a familiar environment.
