Former Charlton Athletic Forward Targets Transfer Reunion
Lyle Taylor, former striker for Charlton Athletic, is reportedly eyeing a return to AFC Wimbledon this summer, as per journalist Richard Cawley via London News Online.
The 34-year-old, having left League One’s Cambridge United following the expiration of his contract, is reportedly aiming for a comeback to AFC Wimbledon in League Two.
How did Taylor fare last season?
Taylor began the previous summer as a free agent post his departure from Nottingham Forest but later joined League One’s Wycombe Wanderers in November. With nine appearances across all competitions for Matt Bloomfield’s side, he departed in January.
After leaving Wycombe, Taylor joined Cambridge United, where he completed the 2023/24 season under Garry Monk. During this time, he made 14 appearances, scoring three goals as the club secured its safety for the second consecutive season.
Why is Taylor adored at AFC Wimbledon?
Following his departure from Bournemouth in 2012, Taylor spent three years searching for stability, finding it with AFC Wimbledon. During his three-year stint from 2015 to 2018, he made 150 appearances, the most for any club in his career, scoring 55 goals and providing 21 assists.
Taylor’s presence significantly contributed to AFC Wimbledon’s success, aiding the club to achieve promotion to League One through playoffs in his debut campaign. His subsequent seasons also ensured the club’s safety before his departure for Charlton Athletic in 2018, eventually moving to Nottingham Forest.
How crucial is Taylor’s next move?
Approaching the twilight of his career at 34, Taylor likely prioritizes playing and enjoying football over financial gains. His return to AFC Wimbledon, where he is revered for his pivotal role in the club’s history, could rejuvenate the team’s attack alongside players like Matty Stevens and Josh Kelly.
Amidst tough seasons and London News Online’s report on Taylor’s desire to return, it’s evident he seeks a familiar and supportive environment over potential uncertainties elsewhere.
