Bruno Fernandes conceded that Manchester United needs to “step up significantly” after surrendering a three-goal advantage in their FA Cup semi-final against Coventry on Sunday before prevailing in the penalty shootout.
The Premier League outfit barely made it through at Wembley after the match concluded 3-3, with Rasmus Hojlund netting the crucial spot kick, while Fernandes also found the target.
“We found ourselves in a tough situation and should have sealed the win earlier, but we failed to do so,” Fernandes stated to ITV.
“We really need to raise our game.”
When questioned if triumphing over rivals Manchester City in next month’s FA Cup final — a repeat of last year’s season-ending showdown — would signify success, the captain emphasized that the club will “never reach true success by merely winning the FA Cup.”
“The expectations at this club are much higher than our recent performances. We must perform better in the (Premier) League, the League Cup, and in Europe,” he elaborated.
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who netted the team’s second goal in a tumultuous 120-minute encounter, remarked that the players had “discovered a method” to secure victory.
