Essendon’s Future List Planning and Potential Signings for 2024

Essendon’s talent and operations manager, Matt Rosa, shared insights on the club’s strategy for the 2024 season, addressing potential free agency targets. Rosa, in his first off-season with Essendon, successfully acquired key players like Ben McKay, Jade Gresham, Todd Goldstein, and Xavier Duursma while retaining their first-round draft pick. These new additions have significantly contributed to Essendon’s strong third-place position after nine games. Despite this, Rosa and his team remain open to exploring all options to further strengthen the team.

Rosa emphasized the importance of free agency and trades in complementing Essendon’s young core, stating that the club is always looking to enhance its list while maintaining a strong draft position. “We value our draft capital and will continue to do so. Keeping an open mind to all possibilities is crucial, especially with our emerging list,” Rosa explained. Last year’s strategy of bringing in experienced players while retaining draft picks proved effective, and they plan to continue this balanced approach.

Essendon has been linked to GWS free agent Harry Perryman, among other potential signings. While Rosa refrained from commenting on specific players, he mentioned that the club is always open to discussions with players interested in joining Essendon if it aligns with their needs. In the short term, the Bombers are preparing for the Mid-Season Draft, necessitated by Jaiden Hunter’s placement on the inactive list due to an ACL injury.

With the Mid-Season Draft approaching, Rosa highlighted the importance of scouting talent nationwide. “We have one spot to fill due to Hunter’s injury. The next few weeks are crucial as we aim to find a player who can make a long-term impact and address immediate needs,” he stated. Rosa also expressed a particular interest in Peel Thunder’s Jacob Blight, noting the defender’s impressive performance in the WAFL and potential as a draft prospect.

Currently holding Pick 15 in the Mid-Season Draft, Essendon is strategically positioning itself to strengthen its roster while preparing for future challenges. The club’s proactive approach in exploring various avenues for player acquisition reflects its commitment to building a competitive team for the upcoming seasons.
