Essendon’s AFLW squad has kicked off their pre-season with high energy and anticipation under the guidance of Senior Coach Natalie Wood. Now entering her third season at the helm, Wood is excited about the preparation time and the team’s potential for the upcoming season.
Following a long off-season, the team has come together, blending familiar faces with new recruits. Wood expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “It’s fantastic to get to the start of June and get all 30 players in. The long off-season involved a lot of thinking and planning, and it’s terrific to have all the players here and getting started.” Among the new faces are promising draftees like Amy Gaylor, alongside experienced players Maddi Gay and Bess Keaney, who have integrated seamlessly into the team and are setting high standards.
The pre-season has been a period of building rapport and strengthening team dynamics. Wood noted the benefits of having finalised the team roster early, allowing new players to train and bond with their teammates well before the season starts. She highlighted how the new players have quickly adapted, saying, “The draftees have really hit the ground running, absorbing everything we’re teaching them about fitness and game strategy.”
The squad’s commitment is also reflected in their response to the league’s new CBA deal, with several players signed through to 2027. Wood praised the squad’s dedication, stating, “The players have embraced the new CBA, worked diligently over the break, and shown a real sense of maturity in balancing rest and rigorous training.”
The coaching staff, featuring continuity and new additions like former Bulldogs AFLW Premiership Coach Paul Groves, has played a significant role in this positive pre-season atmosphere. Wood appreciates the stability and fresh perspectives brought by her coaching team, emphasizing their role in fostering a nurturing and productive environment for the players.
Looking ahead, the 2024 fixture presents exciting challenges, including the inaugural Dreamtime in Darwin clash and a demanding schedule with three games in nine days mid-season. Wood believes the team’s hard work and attention to detail during the pre-season will set them up for success. “We’ve learned that hard work and strong connections can keep us in games longer and improve our overall strategy. It’s going to be an exciting ride with highs and lows, but our preparation now will hopefully put us in good stead,” she said.
As Essendon builds on their inaugural AFLW Finals appearance, the team and coaching staff are geared up for a season of growth and achievement, driven by their shared commitment and excitement for what lies ahead.
