Neil Warnock has expressed skepticism about Huddersfield Town’s ability to avoid relegation as they gear up for a crucial match against Birmingham City.
Warnock, who was one of three managers or head coaches that Huddersfield enlisted this season, carried over from the previous season after steering the Terriers to safety. However, he was relieved of his duties in September. When Warnock departed, Huddersfield were positioned 21st in the league, having accumulated four points from a potential 15 in their initial five matches.
Huddersfield chose to bring in Darren Moore, who had been available after guiding Sheffield Wednesday to promotion through the League One play-offs. However, Moore’s tenure proved to be far from successful, as he managed only three wins out of 23 matches before departing for Port Vale. Unfortunately, his stint at Port Vale ended with relegation over the weekend.
In February, German manager André Breitenreiter was appointed as Moore’s successor, but it appears that he is struggling to prevent the looming threat of relegation. Huddersfield currently find themselves second from the bottom of the table, trailing by three points behind the safety zone with just two matches remaining in the season.
Warnock expressed his disappointment with Huddersfield’s current situation in a conversation with Benjamin Bloom on his YouTube channel. He mentioned, “I’m disappointed to see where Huddersfield are because when I left them in September, I said I’d do a season for them and I thought if I took them to January, we’d almost be safe by then, and then a new manager could come in. It didn’t work out. I was asked to leave in September and the decisions that they’ve made haven’t been the correct ones. They’ve really gone the other way.”
He further added, “I’m disappointed because I think the squad’s a good squad, me. I’m hoping they can still claw their way out of it. But it’s going to be very difficult.”
Regarding the upcoming match against Birmingham City at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday, April 27, Warnock noted that Birmingham’s away record hasn’t been impressive, with only three victories on the road this season, occurring in August, December, and January.
