The Blue Devils officially added to their backcourt. On Thursday afternoon, Rice transfer Cameron Sheffield confirmed his commitment to the Blue Devils, making another addition to the Duke basketball roster official.
Sheffield was said to have committed to Duke as of Wednesday afternoon, with a 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction logged for the 5-time National Champions.
The 6-foot-6 guard, who was not ranked in the 247Sports transfer database, did not play last season due to a foot injury but was granted a medical redshirt. He will have two years of eligibility remaining due to his COVID season.
As a junior, he averaged 7.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 43.0% from the field and 37.3% from 3-point range.
Throughout his Rice career, he has started 55 of 95 games. However, he has never competed in the NCAA Tournament. Sheffield joins Duke’s transfer class, which includes Syracuse big Maliq Brown, Purdue forward Mason Gillis, and Tulane guard Sion James.
The Blue Devils still have one scholarship available, but no further impact rotational players are expected to join the roster.
There was no report on Duke and Cameron Sheffield’s visit. In fact, St. Louis was the only program that expressed an interest in the Georgia native.
Sheffield may struggle to gain playing time this season because he hasn’t played in a year and Duke’s backcourt is so deep. Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster are two returning players for the Blue Devils, who also have the nation’s top recruiting class.
With two years of service remaining, Cameron Sheffield might be considered as a valuable depth piece for Jon Scheyer and the coaching staff, with an increase in minutes during the 2025-26 season rather than this winter.
