DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) – Carter Goodwin went into Saturday’s final round at the 58th Daikin Spirit of America golf tournament, in the lead and was able to hang on through another 18-holes. The former UNA Lion brought home his first victory at Burningtree Country Club.
“To get a win at a place that I’ve been coming to for a long time it’s just awesome,” said Goodwin, “The guys that I was playing with, they’re really good, I knew that they were going to put up a good fight and just really staying patient and trusting myself, trusting my game and fortunately a few putts went in.”
Goodwin shot -15 on the weekend, four strokes ahead of second place.
There was no shortage of Northern Alabama representation amongst the top finishers. Hartselle native, Ryley Heath finish fourth at -9. Guntersville’s Paul Bruce came in third at -11. While, former James Clemens Jet turned Alabama Crimson Tide golfer, Jackson Mitchell came from behind to secure second in his first tournament at Burningtree.
It was a fun day, played well the first three days but just didn’t get a lot of putts to fall. Today, things on the green sort of went my way, you could say, I was really pleased with the result. I enjoyed it, had a blast and I do plan on coming back for sure,” said Mitchell.
